What FPL fixture difficulty really measures
Fixture difficulty is the most used planning tool in FPL and the least examined. Here is what the rating actually measures, why a version derived from match prices beats a static badge, and how to read a ticker properly.
What is FPL fixture difficulty (FDR)?
Fixture difficulty rating (FDR) is a score for how hard a team's upcoming match is, used to plan transfers, captaincy and chips. FPL's official version grades every fixture from 1 (easiest) to 5 (hardest). The idea is simple: players from teams with easy runs return more points, so you buy ahead of good fixtures and sell ahead of bad ones.
How is this ticker different from FPL's own FDR?
FPL's official rating is set before the season and barely moves; the topb.in ticker rates the next gameweek from live match prices instead, so it updates with everything the market knows — injuries, form, managerial changes, team news. Later gameweeks, which the market does not price yet, are rated from each club's underlying numbers for last season and clearly labelled as such.
Why are match prices a good difficulty rating?
Because the market is the sharpest free forecast of a football match that exists. Prices move when news breaks, and by kick-off they have folded in more information than any form table. De-vig the prices and you get each team's expected goals for and against — which is exactly what a difficulty rating is trying to approximate with a single digit.
How should you use a fixture ticker?
Read runs, not single cells: a defender wants three or four low-rated fixtures in a row, while a captain pick only needs this week's cell at its lightest. Doubles show two fixtures in one cell and are prime chip territory; blanks show none and are when a Free Hit earns its keep.
The honest caveat
The market only prices the next round of fixtures, so only the first column of the tickercarries its full sharpness. The weeks beyond it are rated from last season’s attacking and defensive numbers — a sensible prior, clearly labelled, but a prior all the same. Plan runs with the far columns; decide this week with the first one, and with the clean-sheet probabilities behind it.
